Phil F. Van Liew
Close collaboration with clients is essential in order to effectively advocate for their best interests
Intentional approach, successful outcomes
Clients seek legal counsel amidst some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Phil understands this and approaches each case and each client nonjudgmentally and compassionately. He cares about clients’ best interests and works diligently and creatively to minimize their investments of time, money, and stress. Phil’s aptitude for establishing rapport with clients and building collaborations with other professionals has been a cornerstone of his legal practice. He persuasively advocates on behalf of his clients, including in bench and jury trials and contested hearings. From the outset, Phil works his cases on two tracks—striving to negotiate the best deal possible outside of the courtroom, while preparing to attain a successful result in the event of a trial.
After graduating summa cum laude from Marquette University with a double major in Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature, Phil returned to his home state to attend the University of Iowa College of Law. As a student attorney, he represented family law and criminal law clients in the University of Iowa College of Law Legal Clinic and gained additional experience through internships with the Iowa Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division and the State of Iowa Public Defender. After receiving his J.D. with distinction in 2013, he opened Van Liew Law, PLLC. As a solo practitioner in Iowa City and Des Moines, Phil cultivated a successful, client-centered practice specializing in family law, juvenile law, and criminal defense. Phil was excited to join the team of distinguished attorneys at Babich Goldman, P.C., in 2016, to continue passionately and effectively helping clients navigate difficult situations.
Phil lives in Des Moines with his wife Julia, a clinical psychologist. In his free time, he enjoys exploring Des Moines on his bicycle and cheering for the Chicago Cubs.
